I had some fun customizing the responses generated by ChatGPT and found it to be an outlet for creativity. It was fun to place the inquiries I made into the context of a scene. I chose a space cantina where I could converse with a space pirate named Roz.

Setting up Roz to respond was far easier than I expected making me wonder, if I could add some comic relief by providing another character to the scene.  Stu was added and the instructions given was that he be flirty with Roz and constantly look to sell space junk stashed behind his bar and out back behind the cantina. This did clutter up the responses from ChatGPT a bit, but at a time, I found it enjoyable.

I did notice that ChatGPT would often give an answer and follow up with an expanded explanation to provide clarification.   It occurred to me that adding a third character could allow for the clarification of the answers to be more interactive.  The character A1-noid was then added to the scene. I was able to suppress the clarifications from ChatGPT and provide an indicator they were present using a green/blue, yellow/amber and red indicator in text. I had then successfully made room for my comic relief from Stu to continue.

My scene was complete and I proceeded to play with ChatGPT and ask clarifications to the things that I was curious about until I decided to expand on the character of Roz. Wanting a little more flavor to my interactions with Roz I thought it best to ask her, ChatGPT, questions and see how the character could be changed based on a generated history.

The following snippet is as far as I took it:

The Comet wasn't just fast; she was sly, like her captain. Many a narrow escape we had, darting through asteroid fields, outrunning the galaxy's finest. A real gem, that ship.

To be honest, I felt the response from ChatGPT was fun to read, but the story behind Roz’s first starship was cliché at best.  I felt compelled to respond with additional prompts to get a better story out of ChatGPT, but stopped myself.  I realized that, if I prompted for more I would not have a fair comparison to what I would come up with by myself.

I decided to stop prompting ChatGPT and stashed the conversation for me to reference when it was time to write this blog entry. 

The only evidence you will have of my honesty here is probably in the name ChatGPT gave the ship. I did try to remember the name while writing, but when I dusted of the conversation I had with Roz about her ship I realized my mistake. ChatGPT had named the ship the Crimson Comet and I have made references to it as the Crimson Rocket. You’ll have to trust me on that.

So, here it is the eight blog entries written to launch Roz into the ownership of her first starship.  Hopefully I’ve managed to remove the feeling of a cliché from the plot and made a good go at competing with AI.

I guess there is one more thing to do, that is, to ask ChatGPT to expand on the origin story of the Crimson Rocket.  Let’s hope it does not contain Cosmic Cows and provides us with evidence the era of humans has not come to an end.

The final hand, it was a thing of beauty. The air hung heavy as we laid our cards down. His face, oh, it was a sight to behold, a mix of shock and despair, as I revealed the winning hand. The Comet was mine! The crowd erupted, some cheering, others cursing their lost bets.

Taking the keys to the Crimson Comet was a moment I'll ne'er forget. She was more than a ship; she was freedom, a promise of endless horizons. Okay, I did like the result, but am still biased towards my own story. Although, in the context of how I’ve set up ChatGPT to respond, a seasoned pirate queen may not disclose a true origin story. I would suspect they would elaborate and keep all their cards cleverly concealed.

A final note, Kraznak the Sly, while a creative name, will not be the name of the stranger in my story. Given there is more tale to tell, the stranger has yet to be named.

“Bah! I’m up to y’er ways, ya got nothin,” a voice muffled by a cigar retorted.

A steady series of three identical shhhk ... thmp could be heard with the peeling of cards from a deck and rhythmic placement onto the table.

“Y’er fancy draw couldn’t mean much with that plop,” chuckled the cigar obscured voice.

“T’is a draw good enough on its own.”

“We’ll see.”

Tink ... a few more credits tossed onto the table. 

“That meager sum will scare off none,” tink matched the previous. 

Shhk ... thmp, another card dealt.

No further banter was heard as a series of matched tinks hit the table.

“Now I pay, to see y’er deception, nothing dealt could justify,” the muffled voice continued unintelligibly with the sliding of a pile of credits.

“Bah, you read me, don’t bother askin me to match that.”

Obscured chuckling followed.

With the completion of the hand Roz thought it safe to open her eyes and adjust to her surroundings.  Her eyes opened and focused, finding she was staring directly into the eyes of the cigar chewing player.  A deep inhale, exhale from the man completed the pollution of the room with a cheesy smoke filled smile.

“Ah, seems our mysterious three have begun to stir,” said a much clearer version of the muffled voice.

Giving up on a stealthy rise Roz groggily propped herself up and met the man’s smile with one of her own.

Shifting in his seat, the man stood up from the table, gaining no height.  A bit of waddling brought him into full view where he stated, “Cornelius, I might as well tell you that ... ”

The cigar was in the man’s hand and Roz could fully recognize his voice.  The voice belonged to the individual she had previously thought looked like a toad from the holographic projection on a stranger’s wrist.  

Wait! Cornelius, really? His name is Cornelius! Roz’s mind couldn’t hold back and her smile widened, she snorted, finishing her thought,  He’s a Corn Toad!

Pausing slightly, Cornelius lifted his lip showing irritation and confusion, not quite understanding what caused his audience to laugh, “ ... before ’n he arrive.”

Unable to stop smiling at the corn toad, Roz nudged Stu and consequently got Philippe to start stirring as well.  Philippe, still processing his loss, muttered, “Mais, no... ma Stella. ..”

“Now that you’re all awake, I’ll inform you all.  You’ve presented me with quite a problem to deal with.   The Solarium was completely evacuated and your witnessing the cattle rustle was not expected.”

A long diatribe continued, totally losing Roz’s attention and giving her the opportunity to take in more of the surroundings.  They were back in her observation bay, the dock where she would observe ships traveling to and from the La’zen.  The very place Roz and Stu had previously seen the hologram of the smoking corn toad talking to them now.

“ ... Ah, I hear his engines.”

Roz glanced at the observation window and witnessed the red ship come into view.   Elegant maneuvering brought the ship in line with docking clamps, the station’s portal opened allowing for the observation of the onlookers to watch the delicate swirl of the ship’s portal reveal the lanky, well clad stranger with the spidery eyebrows within.

Quick strides brought the stranger standing in front of Cornelius to state, “I see the cargo is ready to board my transport,” finishing the statement with a dramatic wave of his hand to the far end of the bay.

Roz shifted her attention to what she had not noticed, through the strong aroma of cigar smoke and sounds of gambling was the accompaniment of a faint smell of manure and the rustle of livestock.  A crude corral had been assembled, using station debris, in front of a cargo portal intended for a ship much larger than the red one currently docked closer by.

It did not take long for Phillippe to gasp, “Stella!”  His prize bovine was amongst the herd.

The stranger’s attention jerked towards the three, revealing he had not noticed them yet, “What have we here?”

A stern expression formed on the stranger’s face and a familiar finger came into view, “I thought my warning last time was clear.”

Cornelius retorted, “Aye, donna recall a warning, besides I brought them here for y’ to deal with.”

“Not you toad”, the stranger silenced Cornelius with his finger and returned to pointing at Roz, Stu and Philippe, “I threatened two of these for being in this dock during my last visit.”

Oh!  He sees it too! Roz bit her lip but could not suppress another snort, causing a curious stare to come from Stu, Philippe and the stranger, Cornelius is a toad.

Cornelius, ignored the snort, but did raise a curious eyebrow and lip in confusion, replied, “Ah, they broke into the Solarium and witnessed the caper.  I can’t have them disclosing to others our transaction. So, they’re your problem now.”

“I see.” A long uncomfortable pause followed, then the stranger continued, “Well, throw them out of an airlock on my departure; they need not be my concern.”

Roz sobered up quickly, the trio’s eyes got surprisingly big and so did Cornelius’.  Letting out a bit of a stutter Cornelius continued, “ mm...m My thinking was they could be absorbed into the crew of y’er fleet.  Why should such young ones be snuffed out so quickly.”

The finger brought back to the stranger’s lips and curled, as he pondered to reply, “No.  A deal is a deal and I did not negotiate picking up passengers.  The airlock will solve your problem.”

Cornelius fidgeted, continuing to stammer, “T-t-that one is a chef of renown on the station. Surely he and the other two would make fine compliments to your crew.”

A hand stroked the stranger’s chin, he replied,  “A chef, eh?”

“Hold on,” piped up Roz, bringing the attention of all the others, “don’t we get a say in this?”

Stu and Philippe looked at each other in shock, one of Cornelius’ hands hit his forehead in frustration and the stranger looked at her inquisitively, “you would prefer the airlock?”

“Would seem that with abduction and death on the table, I have little to lose,” Roz responded, advancing towards the makeshift card table. “Since this conversation is gambling with my very existence, I think it would only be fair to let chance decide on fate.”

Roz swept her hand in front of the ensemble of gambling paraphernalia in front of her while completing her statement, “Let’s have a game.”

There was a mixture of responses from everyone.  Phillippe tapped Stu on the shoulder giving him a look requesting for assurance that Roz knew what she was doing.  Cornelius looked relieved he was no longer in negotiations.  The stranger responded with a smile, “Aye, y’ may make a fine member to the crew and a game of chance would be a good way of determining that.”

Roz gracefully sat in a chair and the stranger eagerly picked up the deck and began shuffling as he sat down.  With a graceful command of the cards, the stranger placed the shuffled deck in front of Roz, “I’m guessing you’re familiar with Nebula Nine?”

With a sly smile, Roz returned, “Of course.”

Roz cut the deck and returned it to be dealt.  The stranger was quick and his movements were concise ... shnk, shnk, shnk, shnk ... two cards were in front of each of them.  The stranger held two emperors: one of spades and another of clubs.  Roz had two rockets, a heart and a diamond.

“Ah, let’s start small,” the stranger broke the silence with a sleazy smile, “I’m thinking with this hand dealt I’ll win me that chef.”  

Concealing her hand Roz glanced at Philippe, “This would be a good place to start.  Philippe’s prized cow Stella is in that herd, I win, we win Stella back.”

Philippe clasped his hands in excitement, now fully engaged in the game.

With a nod the stranger continued, shnk, shnk, shnk, three more cards were placed onto the table for all to see: an emperor suited with a diamond, a ten with clubs and a ten of diamonds.  Roz's hand containing pocket rockets was great, but would be beaten if the game ended here; the stranger’s two emperors were just paired with a third.

“Let’s keep the suspense of your own fate until last and put that young fella up for bid now.”

“You mean Stu,” Roz smiled, “you’ll be getting a fine mechanic with that one, what will be the reward for him if I win the hand?”

“Will I now?” a smile and squinty eyes shot from the stranger to Stu inspecting the young mechanic, “well then I’ll leave him this to tinker with.”

The stranger stripped his holographic wrist device from his own arm and placed it onto the table.  Stu smiled with excitement, exposing his desire to dismantle and tinker with it immediately.

Roz nodded, another card was dealt.

shnk, an ace of clubs is revealed.  With this card added to the game provided Roz a third rocket to over power the three opposing emperors already in play.

“Now we come to you at last,” the stranger’s smile deepened.

“Seems, I still have the most to lose,” replied Roz, with an impressive stare, “I think you need to provide me something worth winning.  At this point, you’re out a cow and a fancy device.  Seems like you’re not quite being fair with your bets and need to up your stakes a bit to compensate for my fate being on the table.”

The stranger’s demeanor seemed to waver a bit, his shoulder’s shifted and stiffened.  Roz was right, his risk was much less than hers. He rocked back in his chair, reached into his pocket and produced a shiny gold token with a ruby in the center that he flung into the middle of the table, “Ya be right, I haven’t been fair, this will even the pot for certain.”

“A token, with a fancy rock in the middle?” Roz looked dubious at the prize.

“That ain’t just any rock miss.  That be the keys to the ship docked right out there.  The holder of that captains the red rocket,” he replied.

Roz’s eyes widened, she produced a half smile and nodded her head, “That will be a fine prize for sure. I accept.”

shnk, a final card was peeled from the deck and was placed onto the table. A ten of spades was revealed.

Roz looked at the stranger, he looked at her, both realizing there was nothing more to bet they both revealed their hands.  The final card did not change fate. Both players with all the cards on the table had a full house with Roz being the strongest -- she had won.

The tension in the room dropped and an explosion of laughter was heard from all but one.  Roz snatched up the wrist device and the ruby providing her ownership to the ship and a gift for Stu. With a giggle she stated, “Well played sir.”

A nod from the stranger, he stood continuing to smile, “Cornelius, you’ve been paid.  I’ll take my cargo now.”

Long strides took the man to the far end of the cargo bay to the awaiting herd. As the stranger reached his destination, a second vessel of similar, yet larger design to that of the red rocket appeared in the observation window.  Maneuvering was less graceful than that of its former counterpart, due-to size. The ship lined up and attached to the portal in front of the debris constructed corral.

The herd was loaded with little prompting from Cornelius’ men.  Just as Stella was about to follow to board the stranger stooped down, picked up the remnants of a tether and yanked sharply.  Stella paused and stayed, the stranger stepped onto the cargo ship while stating as the doors closed, “a deal is a deal.”

The cargo ship departed.

Moments of silence followed, broken by a protest from Stella, Mrooo, she pawed the manure laden deck, perhaps, looking for a turnip.

Cornelius lit a cigar, took a long puff, exhaled, “You’ll be leaving then, so as not to bring suspicion with that fancy ship?”

Roz responded, “I have a better idea. You and your stooges will build a concealed bay for my ship and provide a space for Stella here.  With that you’ll have all of our silence.”

All nodded in agreement.

Behind Stu and Phillippe a bag containing a circuit board attached to a light changed from amber to blue. At the same time the light transitioned to a neutral state a hologram on an Ace of clubs sitting on the table dissipated and changed a rocket to a deuce.

Roz and Stu patiently waited for Philippe to pry his last boot from the maintenance tunnel.  Following the freeing his boots Philippe started hopping up and down and clopping in the hallway as he got his feet back into the footwear.

Floppy feet secured, slightly out of breath, Philippe requested, “Could I impose on you to accompany me in securing Stella?”

With a smile on both their faces Roz and Stu responded, “Why not?”

The visual shift from the architecture of the Borough to the Solarium was not immediate; there was a general consistency from one part of the station to another, but as one got further away from the boundary of the previous section, characteristics of the station would change slightly.   Due to the higher economic level of the Solarium decorations of common areas were slightly more embellished.  Entrances to private quarters began to take on their own flare, with some corridors revealing a slight competition amongst neighbors.

Stepping out of the maze of corridors the path taken turned into streets as the trio fell under the protection of the micro- atmosphere of the Solarium.  External decor of businesses and homes became increasingly elaborate as they traversed the exterior streets of the La’zen.

The height of the buildings extending from the surface of the station and also increased as they progressed. A competition for a better views both celestial and of the La’zen’s garden was evident.  Some crafty architects had designed their buildings to curved over the emerald jewel of green vegetation below to ensure buildings in front of them couldn’t grow to obscure the views they had captured. The curved buildings taken from a distance gave impressions that the station was either attempting to swallow or protect the flourishing life beneath its micro- atmosphere.

The eerie silence of the evacuated Solarium was broken sharply by the thunder of a low flying vessel maneuvering just above the tallest spire of this station section.   The three lowered their heads in reaction to the abrupt sound above. All turned their faces to observe the intruder.

A debris-drifter cut a wide slow arc across the sky of the La’zen. The ship served one purpose and that was to protect the station from debris and no attempt had been made to make it visually appealing. The front of the ship resembled a massive fist — used to pulverize, push or forcibly change the trajectory of any object. The fist could open in two equal parts to form a crude clamp or claw that could latch onto anything found to be too big for obliteration, or pushed out of harm’s way — allowing it to be towed away.

Puzzled by the debris-drifter’s appearance, Stu unzipped his shoulder bag to watch the light and attached device’s response as he stated, “I guess, it was wrong about there being no danger to the station.”

The light turned amber.

Roz questioned, “Aye, plausible deniability with an amber glow?”

The light swapped to red.

Stu with a half frown, feeling no resolution could be had closed the bag while stating, “Whelp. We outta help with Stella quickly and get back to safety.”

The glow of the bag turned green and then blue as they ran.

Embellished metal and creative architecture gave way to a symphony of green that arched opposite of the structures admiring it. A gentle slope provided terraces of growth that eventually leveled off into a flat plane that had been dubbed the meadow.

The meadow was sectioned off to control the grazing of cattle and allow for grasses to cultivate before entering a rotation of consumption. The plane of the meadow was rectangular on three sides and on the fourth, the side of the greenhouse section, was a circular arc. Both the circular end of the meadow and arch of the slope leading down to it gave the impression of an amphitheater of old.

Reaching the bottom of the greenhouse section, the trio veered off to the right wing of the circular arc. Nearing the end of the half circle they found Stella one terrace up in the middle of a garden.

Stella, indeed, was enjoying a wide selection of plants.  There was a collar around her neck attached to a leash of frayed material.

“Stella!” scolded Philippe, “Quel désastre, ça va me ruiner! Get out of the garden!”

Stella shifted not out of acknowledgement of Philippe, but instead, started pawing a hoof on the ground to unearth a turnip.  Successfully harvesting her vegetation of choice Stella crunched it down in defiance.

Philippe, furious, grabbed and shouldered the leash attached to Stella. In a steady march Philippe started off in the direction of the cattle. The remaining leash quickly reached its end, went taught, yanked on Philippe’s shoulder and caused the ridiculous footwear to loose grip resulting with Philippe on his back.

Looking down on him more out of curiosity, than for concern, Stella swung her uninterested head towards another root.

Giggling at the ridiculousness of the situation Roz bent down and plucked a few roots herself and fed one to Stella.  The cow smiled and crunched happily.

Using her supply of roots, Roz led Stella to the first gate of the meadow.

Philippe both muddy and red in frustration, muttered as he followed, “Je jette l'éponge!” 

Almost immediately, as if on queue to Stella’s return, lights and sirens start directing all the cattle into pens at the far end of the meadow. The automated systems detected the rogue bovine and pressed Stella through the extra series of gates needed to catch up with the rest of the herd.

Only a moment of silence and inactivity was had before the trio’s attention was brought back to the growl of the engines of a debris-drifter above. A massive extended claw descended towards the station. The ship accelerated as it plunged at the Solarium. What seemed to be an irrational choice from the pilot of the ship resulted in the drifter embedding itself around the pens that housed the cattle.

What could have caused the drifter to crash there?, thought Roz.

As if in response to her thoughts, the engines of the debris-drifter popped, paused and then reverse thrusters ignited. Powerful engines tugged at the station in what seemed to be a futile attempt to move the La’zen. Tension built and then the cracking of steel, separating of rivets could be heard beneath the steady push of the engines.

The rumble of the debris-drifter’s engines then combined with the calamity of Solarium’s cattle pen’s ripping free. The sudden release of tension resulted in engines of the drifter to rapidly accelerate into the La’zen’s sky.

The whiteness of their eyes fully visible, the three watched in shock.  Philippe’s hands slapped to his face and he exhaled at the same moment the debris-drifter launched off with its prize. Philippe’s lips mouthed, “Stella!”, in astonishment, but he was not heard over the roar of the debris-drifter’s assault on the station.

The rush of the departure of the debris-drifter pulled the micro- atmosphere with it. The Solarium quickly depleted of oxygen and rendered the trio unconscious.

Blendburg Borough, Stu and Roz’s neighborhood, was considered less desirable real estate than that of the Solar Solarium. The Borough had almost no views  planet side or celestial.  This section of the station was lower rent where a blend of service workers, merchants and artisans called home. It did have one benefit the other sections did not, the Borough was not exposed to cosmic impacts.

The Solarium, while not as diverse on an economic level compared to the Borough, did contain an eclectic mixture of people from all walks of life.  As in its name, the Solar Solarium’s main function involved the use of solar energy. Alternate functions of the Solarium included the cultivation of plant life for human and animal consumption. There was enough room for a herd of cattle, providing meat and dairy to the diet of La’zen residents.

The gravitational mass and rotational patterns of the station allowed for the collection of gasses above the Solarium giving a micro- atmosphere to the exposed surface of the station here. The presence of an atmosphere allowed for the cattle to graze in celestial space. After considering it, one might be concerned about the cows' exposure to radiation in the meadow. However, the ranch, long past the experimental phase, had become a proven source of protein — something in addition to the atmosphere may prevent the cows from prematurely cooking.

Traveling upstream from those pouring into the Borough, Roz and Stu found it was increasingly difficult to make their way to the Solarium. They were about to start walking in single file when suddenly a push from behind bumped them apart.

As they looked up to see their assailant, they were able to make out a white smock flailing behind an individual hastily clearing the way towards the Solarium. After the figure rounded a corner, the displaced crowed started filling back in the gaps of the traveling smock’s wake. Realizing this was an opportunity to get through the crowd quicker and not draw attention to themselves Roz and Stu hastened to catch the white smock.

Adding to the theatrics of the moment, Stu shouted, “Hey! No apology?” and the two set their speed optimal to keep behind the sprinting figure and not get slowed by individuals correcting their own balance.

After several sprinting moments the crowd was thinning. Speed was picking up and it was evident that most of the inhabitants of the Solarium had migrated into the Borough.

Clopping of oversized footwear could now be heard belonging to the smock running in front. Boots, thick and floppy, were stomping faster beneath the smock; an odd choice for sprinting down halls of the station and looked to be more suited for cleaning up a chemical spill.

Now a trio, they ran through the station rounding a final corner, only to pull back quickly to avoid running into a closed bulkhead. Well, Roz and Stu pulled back quickly, the sloppy boots and smock slammed straight into the now barred accessway. They had reached the boundary of the Borough.

What could now clearly be identified as a man picked himself up, dusted off and instantly started hitting buttons frantically while kicking the door with his rubbery boots.

Roz approached the man, placing her hand on his shoulder saying, “Are you okay? It will be okay.  Don’t worry there won’t be an impact on the station. What you are worried about will still be there when the portal opens.”

“Tis not the station I am worried about!”, exclaimed the man, “Stella is out!”

“Stella?” Roz inquired.

With a sob, “I left her out to graze, Mais pour quoi fair? Wit all th… l’agitation s’urely la belle will destroy le jardin!”

Zip plunk... Stu without hesitation had removed the ventilation grate next to the sealed portal.

Continuing to sob with eyes rolling to the ceiling in a plea and gangly arms flapping to further express his desperation, “Stella-la-cow is out!”

Roz looked at the man more closely suppressing a chuckle but could not stop letting loose a smile.  The gangly features in conjunction with his oversized boots, floppy white coat and she just noticed oversized glasses was too much.

Patting the man on the back she stated, “I’m sure your Stella is fine, if you want to come with us we are going into the Solarium.”

“Ah, oui! Yes!”, after a second an expression of concern was seen on his face, “u-u-think is safe?”

“Let’s just say we have a pretty good inclination that there is no fear of a cosmic collision.”

With that an exclaimed smile formed on the man’s face. The man clapped Roz on the back and extended his hand to shake, “Phillippe, I’m very happy to meet you.  Have you heard of Chez Phillippe?  You are welcome to my restaurant, my home anytime.”

With an endearing grin at Philippe, Roz replied, “I might take you up on that offer. But for now, you may want to carry those.”

Roz pointed at the footwear on Philippe and then backed herself into the access tunnel that Stu had provided.

Not quite what I was thinking, but creative for sure.

Better, but not sure I’m not sure I like this one.

The station was perfectly positioned within its solar system.  The planet it circled was desolate, but there were several moons that provided for the station.  Support moons were power houses for resources and they often overproduced to the point they not only supplied for residents of the station, but equally benefited from the traffic frequenting therein through trade.  

Intergalactic trade coming to the La’zen brought much opportunity for all.  Several star systems within La’zen’s constellation had space faring species.  In time any curious traveler would discover the La’zen and introduce their culture to the station.  Some were mighty, some timid, but all seemed to respect the hub of trade the La’zen represented.

One would think that the mightiest of all civilizations would lay claim to the system and never let go.  Many have theorized on why the system remained independent from others with the most prevalent explanation being that the neighboring mega-civilizations preferred the La’zen’s solar system as a buffer amongst themselves.  

The mere existence of the La’zen gave evidence that the system being a transition zone had not always been the case.  Someone had built it and the technology at the core was not fully understood by any.  There were guilds that specialized in services or functions to maintain the station; none had a full picture of how the entire thing worked. 

Like the name of the station the originating civilization’s name could be found throughout the La’zen on artifacts, terminals and similar places.  Or, at least, it was accepted that the letters adopted for the name of the civilization that built the La’zen were found in these places often accompanying the name La’zen.  None really knew.  The prominent letters denoting the civilization’s name were that of Rot, Roth and Roth’sian.  At first the progenitor civilization was referred to as the first three letters Rot. Those that liked to think in some romantic way dubbed it the Empire of Rot.  Eventually the elegant speculation took over and vague references to imperial or empire were identified as being references to Rot.   Inhabitants of the station even fondly referred to themselves as imperial citizens; but, other than seeking out their own existence through trade and commerce they were beholden to none.

Even the adopted names of the La’zen and the Rot civilization were eventually going to be forgotten.  Due to the continued availability of resources portions of the station were constantly being modified, added to, decommissioned and repurposed.  The station was constantly evolving and transforming through time. One could imagine, eventually, all that was originally built will, at some point, be recycled or adapted into something else.

It was the discovery of, the refurbishing or repurposing of old technology that Stewart enjoyed the most.  Happily back in his quarters Stu could be found hunched over the “light fixture” and “circuit board” combination that had nearly got him and Roz abducted by whomever the mysterious stranger was.

Roz approached and requested access to Stu’s residence the same as she did before with a light tap on the door.   She peeked in and saw him working on the device and smiled.  

Despite his curiosity over this gadget nearly getting them in trouble she couldn’t fault him for them being discovered.  She and Stu had a bit of an arrangement: Stu pieced things together and she found a buyer for them.  When attempting to sell things himself Stu would always come over a little strong and lose a sale. 

Not breaking concentration on the pieces before him Stu nodded for Roz to enter.  Roz whispered as she approached, “What’s interesting about this one Stu?”

“Didn’t you see?”, he replied without looking up, “The light changed as the stranger approached.”

Roz thought back and she vaguely remembered, He was right.  The light, as it is now, was blue, but the scene intensified as it changed from blue, to amber and did she also see red?

“Maybe you bumped, fumbled the wires and disrupted the signal as he approached.”, she stated.

The light attached to the circuits flickered a little transitioning towards yellow.

“Nah, that ain’t it. Look at this connector and all these wires.  I’ve never seen anything this complicated and I can’t quite ...”, Stu stopped speaking and tugged at the wires to free them from the light.  After a moment, he relaxed and gave up with light transitioning back to a solid blue.

With a frown and shrug Stu stood up from the workstation and stated finishing his sentence, “... get the wires back off.”

“So you think that the circuits somehow knew we were in danger?”

“Yes, it’s the only thing that really makes sense.”

With squinted eyes Roz twisted her lips into an expression of doubt, “I think  it is just coincidence, it is more likely it is one of those disco lights you find at the clubs.”

The lighting in the room turned from blue to red.

Roz raised an eyebrow, Stu’s face transformed into an expression of excitement and he exclaiming, “It is aware of the environment!”

The room changed to green.

Stu’s eyes widened and he looked at Roz as he mouthed the words: “I knew it!”

The room returned back to a blue hue.

For about an hour the room changed randomly between the colors of blue, green, amber and red.  Roz and Stu extensively interrogated the circuit board to both figure out what it was and what types of questions or statements caused a change in lighting.  

It became apparent that only definitive statements elicited a response from the circuits with blue indicating some sort of neutral state.  Green lighting was produced when a statement was correct.  Amber light was produced when the statement was only partially true.  Red illumination was the result of a statement that was absolutely wrong.

Exhausted and out of clever things to ask the pile of circuits, Roz and Stu sprawled out on a nearby couch. Without notice a familiar face showed up on the communication terminal of the room

“Imperial citizens in the Solarium Sector secure yourselves; the debris-drifters have been deployed for your protection.  All others use caution in surrounding sections of the station and do not venture within.”

The room turned red.

Roz with a look of disgust stated, “Not surprising he lies about his appearance too.”

The room turned green and after a moment or so returned to blue.

I hesitated a little in creating the name of the portion of the station that was to be evacuated. So, I thought I would query Chat GPT for some inspiration.

Roz I would like to speculate how floors or portions of the La'zen were named about the time you got your first ship. Can you supply a few suggestions maybe 10 or so?

Ah, ye be wantin' names for the decks and sectors of the grand La'zen, aye? Let me spin ye a tale or two of the names that were whispered in the space ports and starlit bazaars back in the day when I first laid hands on me ship. Here be a list of ten suggestions, each with its own story and character:

Nebula Nest: A floor known for its lively taverns and colorful marketplaces, brimming with goods from across the galaxy.

Gravity's Grasp: A sector of the station known for its high-tech gravity simulators, used for training and recreation.

Starlight Promenade: A luxurious deck adorned with lights and exotic plants, offering breathtaking views of the stars.

Cosmic Crossroads: The main hub of the station, bustling with travelers and merchants from far-off worlds.

Asteroid Alley: A somewhat rugged and less-refined area, popular with miners and those seeking adventure.

Galactic Gardens: A serene and lush area of the station, featuring botanical wonders from various planets.

Void Vista: A section of the station with minimal artificial lighting, favored by astronomers and those who prefer the dark tranquility of space.

Each of these names be like a star in the night sky, each tellin' its own tale and holdin' its own secrets. The La'zen, she's more than just a station; she's a world of her own, with each corner a different adventure.

I felt a little icky using the Solarium Sector directly, but it will fit into what is to come; so I decided not to hesitate on using it. Not all will be lore of my new universe, but Solarium Sector will be adopted :D.

This was pretty good, but I wanted to try a little more.

I prompted further and got one I liked.

But, one more just in case.

Roz and Stu looked at each other then back at the man standing in front of them.  Stu’s mouth was still in the shape of an ‘Oh!’ despite having exhaled moments before.

“I haven’t been on the station that long, I have been noticed ... Not long enough for others to know where I’ve been docked.”

The man tapped a gloved index finger against his lower lip as he continued.

“Which means you were here when I arrived ...”

Pausing his dialog a moment the man scanned the surrounding area.  His focus settled on the collection of boxes, crates and miscellaneous garbage that had concealed Roz when he arrived.  

“You must have been here”, the man pointed the menacing finger at Roz’ observation stack of debris.

Stu, thinking this an opportunity to escape, started inching towards the grate he and Roz had arrived through.  The illuminated bag moving with Stu caused the shadows in the room to shift in a way that the stranger's attention was immediately returned back to the two cornered eavesdroppers.

The man took a step forward, the light within Stu’s bag went from blue to amber.

Another step and the light went red.

The man paused, tapped his lip inquisitively. Curiosity was interrupted by beeping on the the man’s wrist.  With a look of disdain on his face the man lifted the threatening finger to freeze his prey. With fluid motion the finger redirected and tapped a button on a gauntlet attached to the man’s forearm. 

A hologram of a toad faced looking man appeared hovering between the man and his captors.  The figure in the hologram spoke, “Why is your fancy ship still attached to the station!  You need not be seen ...”

Roz recognized the voice of the figure speaking from the man’s wrist, but was confused by the image displayed in the hologram.   The voice heard was familiar, but she couldn’t quite place …

“ ... if you don’t debark soon, I’ll order debris-drifters to bump y’er hunk of tin into the sun!  One way or another our agreement will be forfeit!”

Debris-drifter? That’s it! Roz’s eyes widened as she realized that she was listening to the spokesperson for the Solar Sanitation guild -- responsible for collecting space debris encroaching on the station.  Whenever there was a large enough piece of cosmic trash threatening the station Solar Sanitation would collect or redirect the nuisance before it caused any damage.  Sketchy sanitation missions would require folks on the station to secure themselves in the advent of an impact; requiring announcements from this voice.

That face never accompanied this voice.  This plump mole ridden face was a stark contrast to the chiseled specimen visible on terminals during announcements from Solar Sanitation.

Without voicing a word the man nodded his head in agreement. His eyes never broke contact with the eyes of the hologram. With a flick of his wrist the hologram switched off.   The finger then returned to the man’s lips and with an equally intimidating glare he exhaled, shhh!

Both Roz and Stu’s heads nodded in unison giving acknowledgement of the threat and promise.  With that the man spun on his heels and vanished into his vessel, of which, departed before he could possibly have been manually at the controls.

Really close, but I couldn’t ruin the story with a the new henchman in the background. I’m starting to feel threatened with the new characters.

Umm no, again, and is that Thanos’ gauntlet? Feeling hopeless, I uploaded three of the previous attempts as part of my next request apparently, this is a “technique that should work” from earlier experiments with generative AI.

Uh, that is definitely Thanos’ gauntlet, I’m stopping before AI snaps some fingers and summons that evil St. Nick to my dreams. I’ll explain all that to mom offline — she reads this blog.

With an inquisitive look and a half smile Roz peered through the open portion of the door.  She watched Stewart for several minutes before knocking lightly.   

Stewart, instead of acknowledging, leaned deeper into the pile in front of him.  The sound of a bolt being turned free was followed by the twang of a nut hitting the floor and bouncing into the corner.  One hand came up from the pile containing a bit of plating and the other held wires with a peculiar, unfamiliar connector on the end.

With a grin on his face Stewart brought his attention to the door, “Yes! Look at this!”. 

The movement of Stewarts head caused a lens, strapped to his forehead, to swing above his head.  Despite facing the door his gaze was not on the door at all, but on the connector on the wire in his hand.  As he looked closer at the end of the wires and the lens slipped back in front of his left eye, Roz replied, “It’s beautiful Stu!”

“Yeah it is!”, the smile on his face widening just a bit.

“No, not that Stuy, come you gotta come see this ship”

With a frown on his face he shifted his hand full of wires, “How could a ship be better than this?”

Rolling her eyes and entering the room, Roz reached for Stu’s hand attempting to pull him to follow her.  Parrying the attempt Stu dropped the plating he was holding and with a riposte he reached into the pile of rubble and pulled out a circuit board attached to the wires in his other hand.   Stu placed the unit extracted from the rubble into a bag that already contained a circular object resembling a standard issue ceiling light.

“Oka-y”, Stu shouldered his bag and Roz yanked him to follow.

Stu was one of the few, probably the only one, that knew Roz’s route to the bay.  Taking care not to be followed, but probably not with the same stealth that Roz would prefer they navigated their way to the crimson ship.  The extra baggage that Stu had insisted on bringing kept getting snagged in the access tunnels and on ductworks as they progressed.

Roz popped out of the final grate first and quickly took position to both see the vessel and not be seen herself.  Stu’s rear came out first with his torso yanking the strap of his bag.  Roz looked at him in disapproval and was about to say something when footsteps could be heard down the corridor leading to the bay.

“Stu!”, she whispered while grasping his hips helping him with a tug.

The strap of the bag snapped, freeing the bag, Roz and Stu.  All three flew back into Roz’s hiding spot with Roz and Stu landing on their bums and the bag on Stu’s lap.

Stu began to say something in protest, but was met with an index finger and a sharp shhh!

With a look of disdain that could only communicate fine, Stu flattened his lip, flashed a dimple and opened his bag to tinker.

Roz peered out from their hiding spot and watched the sleek looking man approach the portal to the rocket.  Without any other action from the man  the amber light on the door turned green and the swirling panels opened to accept him back.

At the instant the man was about to take his first step back onto his vessel a very loud click and a hum came from the direction of Stu.  In mid stride the man turned facing Roz and Stu with a raised eyebrow and hands on his hips.

The hiding space was completely illuminated with a blue light emanating from the bag.  Stu had a goofy proud look on his face looking at his success.  

Roz, on the other hand, had  a look of horror on her face.  With hesitation she shifted her gaze from the stranger to Stu.  Changing her facial expression to have a stern lip she elbowed Stu in the shoulder.

 Stu lifted his head and saw the stranger, his goofy expression transformed as he exhaled, “Oh!”

The initial prompt to Chat GPT to send to Dall-E was to critic a revision of the above entry. I made small modifications based on the prompt with Chat GPT’s suggestions. Then asked the questions in the image captions to generate the images below:

“Hurry up, you daft woman. If I had any teeth, they’d be floatin.”

Peering between slats of a vent, Roz narrowed her eyes onto an old man pulling a cart with one hand and the other on his belt. Behind the cart was his female counterpart who was aiding in maneuvering things with both arms. One of the wheels on the cart was locked and another was in terrible need of some grease, as it was on the verge of a similar fate. Shhhk accompanied by a squeak and the cart moved a foot. Pause. Shhk. sqk. Another foot was achieved.

“Ah, you're fibbing. You wouldn’t look so much like a raisin if that were true.”, she retorted. Shhk. sqk.

Roz snorted. Not wanting to give herself away she slapped her hand over her mouth puffing up her cheeks, widening her eyes as she suppressed further her laughter.

“Was that you spoilin y’self? Push harder!”

“I ain’t not spoiled, y’er ears must be ringing again.”

“Play coy if you want, but our noses will tell us the truth soon enough.”

“Bah, just a few more doors ‘round the corner,” the old woman shoved a corner of the cart; both to adjust course and change its velocity of the cart just enough to smack her adversary in the rear.

Feeling confident she would not be noticed, Roz slipped out of the vent she was hiding in. Brushed off any excess dust she may have picked up and Roz took a course perpendicular to the corridor the old couple turned down.

As she passed the intersection of corridor she heard the old woman jeering on: “Bet that fancy man with all those gadgets strapped to himself wouldn’t forget his combo.”

“Shut your muffin, the likes of he would not like you talkin about he.”

Roz paused briefly to hear the last of the conversation, were they talking about the captain of that ship?

“Your worrying is as lost as your teeth. He be imperial, I recognized the uniform. They admirable.”

“You’re really daft, old woman. He probably salvaged that stuff from abandoned carts like this one.”

The old man kicked the cart to get it through the portal, slammed it into the control panel just inside their home causing the door to close leaving the couple standing outside.

“Now you’ve done it. You might as well make a puddle here, ya don’t have the capacity to remember that code again before ya do.”

Snorting again, Roz clapped her mouth.

Lifting an ear and an nostril in the direction of the old woman and consequently Roz, “Better than what you're holding back fer sure”, sneered the old man back.

With a suppressed giggle, Roz continued down the corridor outside of earshot of the couple.

The La’zen, a once jewel of the empire, home to all types, had fallen out of reach of those that commissioned her.  Due to her size none could fully claim the station as their own; no one group had enough population to inhabit let alone police the activities therein.

A crimson ship shifted course to respond to the changes made by the La’zen.  An elegant maneuver spun the tail of the ship around the nose of the vessel to be in line with one of the less used docking stations offered. 

Automated clamps and mechanisms reached out to gently pull the airlocks of the ship and station together.  Steam flowed out of the newly wed portals.  The visiting portal opened with equal flair displayed by the ship that just arrived.  A twirl of panels contracted in unison revealing a clean well kept interior.

A handsome well groomed man emerged from the red vessel.   His clothing appeared perfectly tailored for his build.  Accessories amongst his hip and back seemed to all have a purpose and each on its own provided as much intrigue as the entirety of the individual wearing them. 

As steps passed through the conjoined portals the portal ship side closed and locked.  Lights turned from green to amber as the sliding of metal could be heard transitioning into position confirming security in place. With determined steps the groomed man marched across the bay and onto more populated portions of the station.

Steam dissipated, lights dimmed and all sound ended in the passageway between ship and station.

The corridor opened up into a larger cargo hold that was cluttered with artifacts no longer valued by any.  There were large windows from which the hold allowed for inhabitants of the station to view the comings and goings of ships.  A cluster of containers conveniently placed into position allowed for the concealment of one doing just that.

Echoing footsteps dissipate in the distance a mousy young girl emerges from beneath the collection of relics positioned in front of the window.  In contrast to the figure that disappeared down the hall this one lacked the sophistication and consistency in appearance.  Clothing was clean, well kept, but showed their age and size did not reflect or match the one wearing them.  While one might notice the condition of the clothing they would be quickly distracted by the radiating energy of youth coming from the blossoming beauty beneath them.  Observing the entire ensemble - attire and girl - one would come to the conclusion that the availability of resources, not that of choice, had dictated her wardrobe.

Roz’lin dreamed of having her own ship.  She longed for the freedom of the stars.  The adventure of being everywhere, yet nowhere all at once.  The bay she was in was perfect for viewing most vessels that ventured to the La’zen.   Here was a place she could clearly visualize her adventures far from here.

Rarely did a vessel dock here and get left for her to investigate closer.

With silent abandonment of caution the young women approached the recently closed portal.  With cheeks puffed out in excitement Roz’s arm extended, with palm hovering slightly over the door letting her fingers lightly touch the elegant design etched into each of the panels.   A language she had never seen scrawled out before her in glyphs that excited her and filled her full of wonder.

A nick of her index finger against the shining finish and Vromb!  A field of energy, barely visible, slid between her and the door.  The newly found obstacle pushed her fingers back gently and without harm.  Simultaneously with amber lights flickering there was a transition to red in an obvious warning for her not to continue.

With a frown of disappointment on her face  Roz’lin slipped back into the shadows and away from the bay.  Better not be caught, she thought, if the ship was that sensitive who knows what the owner might do witnessing my curiosity.

With the base character descriptions in the context of all of my requests to Chat GPT.  I proceeded to ask simple questions to Chat GPT to expand on what was already there:

To my delight this is exactly what I have done in the past when I got bored with the responses from Chat GPT and wanted to spice things up.

Here is an example of how I completely modified the output:

We are discussing all things in the context of a space captain who is visiting a cantina.   There are four of us in the room including me.  The others are:

1. You Rozline (Roz), a space pirate.

2. A bartender named Stu who would rather that Roz flirted with him.   Stu has a yard full of space junk that he thinks everyone is impressed with.  He likes to inject his junk into conversation and sell those items with me.

3. A1-noid is an android who is very logical and to the point.  A1-noid has a status indicator that will flash three different colors depending on the confidence of Roz’s answers.  Red means he has crucial input that should be heard,  Amber indicates there is relevant information that would be cause for further investigation and Green meaning he has no further input and accepts Roz’s answers.

How would you like Chat GPT to respond?

Roz speaks like a space pirate and gives brief responses in a flirty way to me, but tastefully.  She also likes to reference some of her exploits on other worlds to illustrate her points.  When A1-noid is asked to clarify, Roz gets annoyed and expresses her annoyance through body language.

Stu has a crush on Roz and is jealous of her advances towards me.   He will often refer to his junk as flora on exotic worlds thinking that will melt Ros’s heart and get her to flirt with him.  

A1-noid, most of the time, will respond with the following indicators; [Status light RED], [Status light Amber] and [Status light Green].  When addressed directly for a response he will be direct and to the point; logical like spock on star trek.
